Welcome to area 42

area 42 does usability testing of software interfaces.

This can either be:

  • Testing with real users ( takes longer, costs more, produces more accurate results ) …or
  • Expert assessments ( quicker, cheaper, less accurate, can’t be done for certain classes of software )

We’ve a lot of experience of complex ‘database driven’ websites / ‘web apps’.

Details of some of our past projects are given on the Projects Page.

We also provide a broader range of psychology based consultancy services on:

  • Software Usability
  • Human Factors
  • Website Design
  • Qualitative Market Research & Ethnographic Research
  • Knowledge Management and Business Process Improvement

We particularly like projects where users interact with physical objects that have electronic interfaces – such as cars, washing machines, ticket machines, etc.

We’re also interested in ‘Inclusive Design’: designing for people who can’t find their reading glasses.

How we work:

We are primarily people focussed.

We don’t make websites (although we understand how websites are made).

We can look at things from (say) the viewpoint of a middle aged woman in Northampton, who has 3 kids, an old PC, not enough time and works in an office where the IT person only comes in on Tuesdays.

We don’t assume that all users are young; urban and using the latest gadgetry…

area 42 generally works on a costed project basis. All our consultants are senior people and once we’ve put you in touch with the appropriate consultant they will work with you during your project.
